5th Annual Honouring our Languages Conference

Our Languages Our Way: Revitalizing Culture, Language and Traditions

Let’s celebrate the International Year of Indigenous Languages together!

The 5th annual Honouring our Languages Conference is calling for presenters from various language groups (Cree, Ojibwe, Ojibwe-Cree, Dene, Dakota, Michif and Inuktitut) to share their knowledge, experiences, successes, insights and ideas.

The conference subject matters could include, but is not limited, to:

1. How to improve/update/expand on existing language resources and programming;

  • Specific areas for improvement
  • Supports for teachers/educators
  • Sharing and collaboration
  • Community and family Involvement
  • Apprentices, learning from experts and Elders to continue the work
  • Inspiring youth, the importance of Indigenous languages for the future

2. Essential components of Indigenous education

  • Curriculum based on traditional language acquisition reflective and of age appropriate content
  • Land Based Education
  • Resource Development
  • Support and accessibility 
  • Elders and Knowledge Keepers
  • Encouragement to be literate in their respective languages

3. Identifying and resolving existing barriers to Indigenous language instruction

  • Institutional and/or community approval
  • ‘Dialect’ or geographical specialization
  • Ideas to instil motivation and pride for language learners
  • Immersion


Presentation Guidelines

We are seeking individuals, families, educators/teachers and advocates to share perspectives, best practices and methodologies at our conference. If you know of anyone else whom you think has the experience, energy, and knowledge, please share this call for presentations with them. Each presenter will receive free entry to the conference in exchange for their presentation.

To be considered as a presenter, your presentation:

  1. Must be focused on one of the content areas. 
  2. Abstract to consist of no more than 200 words
  3. All material should be original; otherwise, sources must be referenced.
  4. Presentations, with a brief session for questions and answers, must be kept within the time limit. 
  5. Must be accompanied with a photo and short biography of presenter (s)

The 2019 Honouring our Languages committee will review each proposal after the submission deadline of September 20, 2019. Only those who have been selected to present, will be contacted by the HOL committee by September 30th, 2019. Please send submissions to:
